Ford Fathom vs F-150 Lightning
A lot of sites still compare the Fathom against a current F-150 Lightning. That is out of date, and the correction matters more than the comparison.
Short answer. This comparison has an unusual answer: you cannot buy an F-150 Lightning. Ford ended production in December 2025 and there is no 2026 model. If you are cross-shopping these, the real choice is between a used Lightning, the Fathom in late 2027, or the F-150 Lightning EREV that revives the name in 2028 as something quite different.

What actually happened
Ford ended production of the 2025 F-150 Lightning in December 2025, confirmed publicly by Ford Blue and Model e president Andrew Frick. Ford cited an eroded business case and lower-than-expected demand, and booked $19.5 billion in related charges including $8.5 billion for cancelled EV models. There is no 2026 Lightning.
These were never really competitors anyway
The Lightning is a full-size truck that towed up to 10,000 lb and carried 2,235 lb. The Fathom is a midsize or compact pickup at roughly half the price. Even when both existed, a buyer who needed the Lightning's capability was never going to be satisfied by the Fathom — and Ford has published no towing or payload figure for the Fathom at all.
The name is coming back, as something different
Ford has announced an F-150 Lightning EREV for 2028: a gasoline engine acting as a generator for a battery and electric motors, with a claimed 700-plus miles of total range. That is an extended-range electric vehicle, not a battery-electric one, and it is a different proposition from the truck that was cancelled.
If you want a used Lightning
They exist, and Ford has committed to post-production support including software updates and a ten-year parts commitment. One practical note for accessories: Lightning owners with a Ford Charge Station Pro should know it uses a CCS1 connector with a physical rib that blocks standard adapters, so it will not simply plug into a native-NACS truck.
