Level 1 vs Level 2 charging: which do you actually need?
Almost every new EV owner asks this, and the honest answer is that a large minority genuinely do not need Level 2 — while for everyone else it is the single best purchase they will make. Here is how to tell which group you are in. None of this depends on Fathom specifications; it is true of any EV today.
The actual difference
Level 1 is a standard household outlet at 120 volts, typically drawing 12 amps. That is about 1.4 kW, which for an electric pickup means roughly 2 to 4 miles of range per hour of charging.
Level 2 is a 240-volt circuit, the same kind that feeds a clothes dryer or an electric range. At 40 amps it delivers around 8.6 kW — roughly six times faster, or somewhere around 16 to 24 miles of range per hour for a truck this size.
Those mileage figures are ranges because efficiency varies, and the Fathom has no published efficiency figure at all. Our charging calculator shows both ends rather than a single invented number.
The arithmetic that decides it
Work out your real daily mileage, then multiply by how many hours the vehicle sits at home. If you drive 30 miles a day and park for 12 hours overnight, Level 1 replaces 24 to 48 miles in that window. You are fine.
If you drive 70 miles a day, Level 1 cannot keep up and you will slowly drain the battery across a week. That is the threshold, and it is roughly 40 to 50 miles a day for most people.
Two caveats push people toward Level 2 even under that threshold: cold weather cuts charging efficiency noticeably, and an occasional long day leaves no recovery margin overnight.
What Level 2 costs
The charger itself runs roughly $300 to $700. Installation is the variable part, and distance from your electrical panel is the dominant factor — from a few hundred dollars on the same wall to several thousand for a detached garage.
One important change: the federal 30C tax credit that covered 30% of charger and installation costs expired on June 30, 2026. Several manufacturers still advertise it on their product pages. That claim is now false. Check your state and your utility instead, since many still offer rebates.
The middle option most people miss
If your laundry room shares a wall with the garage, a NEMA 14-30 dryer outlet already provides 240 volts. A charger that plugs into it delivers around 24 amps — not full speed, but roughly six times Level 1, with no electrician, no permit, and no wiring work at all.
For a lot of households this is the correct answer and it costs only the price of the charger.
